I received my PhD in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania in 2018. I subsequently served as Associate Director of the Penn Project for Philosophy for the Young, a K-12 outreach program. In addition to general support for the project’s activities, this involved developing lessons and other resources for teaching the philosophy of science to high school students (I co-authored a 2022 opinion piece based on this work).
My dissertation explored the role causation plays in scientific explanation. In addition to continuing this reseach, I enjoy working on related issues in metaphysics and the philosophy of mind. Here are links to my pages on philpeople.org and google scholar.
Prior to graduate school I had a long career in investment management, most recently as a partner of Permit Capital, LLC, in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. Prior to that I was a managing director of Morgan Stanley. I graduated with a BS in business and economics from the University of Delaware in 1985.
In recent years I have begun to spend more time on philanthropic activities, and have served on several nonprofit advisory boards. I am particularly interested in effective charitable giving (see my philanthropy-related blog posts).
I have lived in the Philadelphia region for over 30 years now. I am married and have two adult children.
