About

I received my PhD in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania in 2018. I subsequently served as Associate Director of the Penn Project for Philosophy for the Young, a K-12 outreach program, and co-developed and taught a course module on “the philosophy and ethics of science” to high school students (here is a 2022 opinion piece based on this work).

My dissertation explored the role causation plays in scientific explanation across the natural sciences. In addition to continuing this research, I work on related issues in metaphysics and epistemology. Here are links to my pages on philpeople.org and google scholar.

Prior to graduate school I had a long career in investment management, most recently as a partner of Permit Capital, LLC, in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. Prior to that I was a managing director of Morgan Stanley. I graduated with a BS in business and economics from the University of Delaware in 1985.

I am now retired from full-time work, and focus more time on philanthropic activities. I serve on several nonprofit boards/advisory committees. I am particularly interested in effective charitable giving (see my philanthropy-related blog posts).

I have lived in the Philadelphia region for over 35 years now (and have an excessive interest in Philly’s sports teams). I am fortunate to have a wonderful spouse and two great (adult) children.
